The proposal is based on how we understand the cycle of materials of a house planned to be demolished. The possibilities of using some parts in order to shape an alternative or future use instead of adding more construction waste, with its carbon impact, to the production line seems to be a challenging and exciting opportunity in order to embrace the future of the professional field.

Usinng 206 College Avenue as a case study, we aim to communicate the issue of the short life span of materials in the construction industry. To empower future generations and shift from a passive to an active approach, our team proposed to repurpose the idea of a staircase, salvaging as much as possible of the original wooden module as well as adding from different parts of the house, ending in a follie. The prototype-modern reading of a “folly” seeks to answer questions including:

What does a folly mean today?

What is the purpose of these proposals?

Addresing the scope of architecture made of repurposed materials, our aim is to provide a point of reflection to observe and pause, to make contact with nature and turn the user, the student, into the main protagonist of a free story where the object is a mere excuse to connect with the dramatic views from campus.

The design phase is based on the analysis of the American single-family home, and how the construction typology provides material opportunities to be implemented in new figures and forms. The house itself becomes a kind of material laboratory, where through visits and documentation, we develop the ability to identify specific material sections and pieces to use in the folly project. The house is deconstructed and stored in different parts in the Reuse Center, Ithaca, where the timber beams and boards necessary for the execution of the design are cataloged.
